Kinesio taping is a technique of applying elastic tape to the skin over a muscle, tendon or joint that is painful or injured. Unlike a bandage, the tape does not restrict movement; it moves with the body and is worn for three to five days, so it keeps working while you work, train or sleep. At Fizio Spa in Zrenjanin the tape is applied by a physiotherapist after an assessment, either on its own or as an add-on to a treatment.
At Fizio Spa, kinesio taping is one of the techniques we most often combine with therapy. Working with the Serbian national wrestling team, Marko noticed that the tape drained swelling after an injury faster than classic compression, and it has since become a standard part of our protocols.
The technique was developed in the 1970s by the Japanese chiropractor Kenzo Kase. The tape is made of cotton, is elastic and self-adhesive, contains no medication and is hypoallergenic. It is applied directly to clean, dry skin, with the tape stretched more or less, while the body part is held in a specific position.
Kinesio taping has nothing to do with an elastic bandage that restricts movement. On the contrary, the tape allows full movement and does not cut off circulation, which is why it is popular in elite sport.
The tape gently lifts the skin and gives the body a constant signal as you move. In practice we use it when we want:
The tape is an add-on, not a substitute for therapy. It works best alongside exercises and treatment that address the cause, for example as part of rehabilitation or physical therapy.

Before applying the tape, the physiotherapist assesses the condition: whether the problem is acute or chronic, whether there is swelling, and which muscle or joint needs support. This determines the shape (an I, Y or X-shaped strip), the direction and how much the tape will be stretched. The same spot may be taped completely differently on two different people.
The tape stays on for three to five days. Water does not affect it, so you can shower and swim; afterwards just pat it dry gently with a towel, without rubbing. If needed, a new tape is applied after that period.
We do not apply tape over an open wound, cut, burn, rash or sun-damaged skin, or over an area with an infection or skin inflammation. In cases of malignant disease, thrombosis or diabetes with skin damage, the decision is made together with a doctor. During pregnancy, kinesio taping can be used for back pain, but only after an assessment.
You can book taping on its own or as an add-on to a treatment, when it is cheaper. Current prices are in the price list. If you are not sure whether tape is the solution for your problem, get in touch and we will assess the condition first.
Usually three to five days. After that, if needed, the physiotherapist applies a new tape.
Yes, water does not affect the tape. Wait about an hour after it is applied, and after showering just pat the tape dry gently with a towel.
No. The tape is an add-on that eases symptoms and supports the body, while therapy and exercises address the cause of the problem.
It is possible, but the result depends on the correct direction, stretch and position. That is why it is better to have a physiotherapist apply the first tape and show you how.
